  • Large sheet of paper or poster board (e.g., for a full-day timeline)
  • Colored markers or crayons for drawing
  • Cardboard patches for marking needs (water, food, rest, help)
  • Optional: A toy clock for visualizing time changes
  • Glue or tape for attaching pictures and symbols
  • Scissors for cutting shapes or symbols

Preparation

Gather the materials.

Implementation

Puppet Play

Kira and Miro introduce the activity by saying, "Let’s explore what we do each day at kindergarten and think about what we need during each part!"

Miro prompts with questions like, "When do you drink water?" or "What do you need during rest time?"

Kira encourages children to share their thoughts about their favorite activities and their needs during those times.

The puppets ask the teacher to work this out with the children and give them a review later (or at the next meeting).

Discussing Daily Activities

The teacher moderates the group discussion and takes minutes.

Creating the Timeline

Children work together to draw a simple timeline on a large sheet of paper. They include segments like morning, lunch, and afternoon, and add colors or symbols to mark different parts of the day.

Adding Activities

The teacher helps children select or draw pictures of daily activities (e.g., circle time, play, meals) and attach them to the timeline in the appropriate segments.

Identifying Needs

A group of children prepares cards to represent different needs.

For each activity, children think about what they might need and use cards with labels (or draw symbols), e.g.:

  • Water: when they are thirsty, e.g. during playtime or after a walk.
  • Food: when it’s time for a snack or lunch.
  • Rest: when they feel tired, e.g. after lunch.
  • Help: if they need assistance from a teacher or friend.
  • A warm welcome: from a teacher or friend upon arriving at kindergarten.

Each child chooses an activity and adds a card with their need to it. e.g., for snack time they might draw a symbol of food or attach a card labeled “Food,” and for rest time they might use a symbol of the relaxing area or a card labeled “Rest.”

Reflection

Reflection and Sharing (Puppet play)

Once the timeline is complete, the children present it to Kira and Miro.

Kira and Miro ask questions, paraphrase what the children explain, and give positive feedback.

They emphasize how important it is to check one's needs during the day.

They note that everyone may have different needs (e.g., not everyone feels sleepy after lunch), which can lead to the variation Personal Timelines.

Variations and Additional Ideas

Personal Timelines

Each child creates a smaller, personal timeline reflecting their favorite activities and needs, either at kindergarten or at home.

Role-Playing Daily Needs

In small groups, children act out parts of the day, expressing their needs aloud (e.g., I’m thirsty after playing outside).

Planning the Day

Children and the teacher collaborate to plan the next day’s routine, deciding how to meet needs like rest, food, and playtime together.
